First Homes Taking Shape at Brooklands
The first of two and a half thousand new homes are taking shape on the Brooklands development which will transform the eastern side of Milton Keynes into a modern, environmentally sensitive and hi-tech community.
Brooklands combines homes, schools, businesses, sports facilities
and open space with picturesque streams and meadows and over the
next ten years will become one of the most desirable places to live
in the region. Superfast Broadband carried by fibre optic cable -
the fastest in the region - will come as standard to all the
residents and businesses from the day they move in.
Already, much of the infrastructure is complete with roads and
drainage in place among the many thousands of trees and shrubs
planted across the 365 hectare site.
The first phase of two hundred completed houses, constructed to the
highest standards by Countryside, will be of two to five bedrooms
with special attention being paid to providing sustainable living.
These will be ready to move into in September at the same time as
the new Brooklands Farm Primary School welcomes its first
pupils.
"The first homes will go on sale in the summer and we're
certainly anticipating a great deal of interest from the buying
public," says Simon Elcock, project director for Places for People.
"We've seen the strong demand for well designed and sustainable
homes in a mature and attractive setting with the popularity of the
Wolverton Park development. We are expecting demand at Brooklands
to be very high indeed."
Two high quality children's play areas are under construction
each aimed at different age groups. Special attention is being
given to using play equipment constructed from natural materials of
the highest quality.
The landscaped Brooklands Ridge is well under way, creating an
astonishingly effective barrier to the noise from the busy M1
motorway. A million cubic metres of soil is going into creating
this attractive noise attenuation feature which is the largest of
its kind in Europe. All the earth has been tested and treated to
ensure it is completely inert.
The unique design of the whole development is cleverly
calculated so that as the number of homes and businesses grows
towards completion in around ten years time, Brooklands will mature
from a village to a town. The main road through the development
will host shops and other small-scale commercial development as in
a traditional town street. This will also be the main route for
buses which will be given priority to encourage a more sustainable
attitude to transport in the town.
"For all of us involved in the development," Simon says, "this
is more than just another housing project. We believe Brooklands
should and will be a special place to live, work and play, and we
hope it will be seen as a great example of how this kind of town
should be planned and delivered in the future."
